Main Point: The Sermon on the Mount speaks with extraordinary power and relevance presenting us with a vivid description of the lifestyle of a Christian.
What Are the Benefits of a Study of the Sermon on the Mount?
- The sermon on the mount puts Jesus front and center.
- Every time we read a section of this sermon, we should be asking, “What does this teach me about Jesus?” Why is that important? Because living out the sermon on the mount can never be divorced from a right relationship with Jesus.
- The sermon on the mount presents Jesus as both Savior and Lord.
- The forgiven life and the holy life, in Jesus’ view, are two sides of the same coin. We can’t treat Jesus like the buffet at the Shady Maple - taking the parts we like about Him as Savior but declining the parts that are hard about Him as Lord.
- The sermon on the mount clarifies confusing issues.
- This sermon speaks to issues that are difficult, controversial, cultural and relevant.
- Here’s the kinds of questions that the SOTM hits head on…
- What does it mean to live a Christian lifestyle in an increasingly secularized society?
- To what extent are Christians really different from other people?
- How can we, BGC, live like a city on a hill that cannot be hidden? How can we live in this community and make a difference for Jesus in a way that people would notice if we disappeared?
- Are our faith and life as obvious to others as Christ's words suggest they should be?
- What is Christian character?
- What is the place of the law of God in the life of a Christian?
- Is discipline important?
- How should we pray?
- How can we be free from anxiety in an anxiety-ridden world?
- What’s wrong with being judgmental?
- What is spiritual discernment and why do we need it?
- The sermon on the mount gives us a glorious vision.
- Some people are scared of the sermon on the mount. Some have described it as causing “the greatest possible guilt in the fewest possible chapters!” But the goal is not guilt. The goal is glory. Christ is setting before us a glorious vision of what He intends our lives to become!
